Persuasive Essays

My sixth grade class has been working on persuasive essays this quarter, and one of their first assignments was to write a persuasive piece on what Mr. and Mrs. Dainty should name their baby! They worked in partners, and they got to choose either a girl's name or a boy's name. Their responses were quite interesting and they have certainly given us some chuckles. Here are some of the highlights. (Spelling and grammar errors have been left in for comedic purposes.)

Most Unique Supporting Details

"Isabella is a perfect name because Queen Isabella helped supply Colombus for his trip across the sea. When we were younger we wished that there were famous people with our names. Many people may think Isabella is a weird name, but we think it is very beautiful."

"I picked the name Tera because it is easy to spll, and Tera sownds like she will be smart like her mother. Her mother is so smarte. And she will want to be a techer like her." (This child obviously received an "A," despite spelling errors.)

"Naming her Nicole would mean she would be inspired by you because she would share the same name with you and you are mother and daughter. It would definintely make her want to spend more time with you when she is a teenager. She would want to follow in your footsteps, and look to you for help. It would be unique if Mr. Dainty let Mrs. Dainty name the baby after her... Also, it would be like naming the baby after Santa since another name for him is Saint NICOLElas. Everyone likes Santa."

"Mrs. Dainty's baby should be named Dezzeray. Because it is a name that will never get old. It means 'the desired one' in French, and that is a good thing to be." (Can you tell this girl is in middle school??)

Best Suggestions for Boy Names

"The reasons I think you should name your baby Matthew are: Matthew was a saint and a disciple. The name Matthew is also a cool name. There are also a lot of famous people named Matthew. Some other names are harder to learn and spell. It also means gift from God. Last but not least, it's my name! There is nothing bad about the name Matthew!"

"Ryan is a great name. It's Mr. Dainty's name and it's cool to be named after your dad. Also, a kid named Ryan will probably be good at sports."

Most Embellished Vocabulary

"We would like to name Mrs. Dainty's baby Vanessa Olivia Dainty because Vannessa Olivia is a sweet and gentle name that gives a beautial touch in the warm cool air. Vanessa Olivia is not a childish name; it is the name of a beautiful, extravagent, magnificint woman. It is a colorful name. It contains the word 'live.' The name goes well with the last name Dainty which means 'delicate, elegant, graceful, refined, exquisite, petite, neat, and deft.'"

"Lillie is also a wonderful name because you could tell her, 'You are my favorite Lillie in my garden.' Then you would have the pleasure of watching her face light up with joy every time you speak those loving words. People could also say that she is a Dainty Lillie that blows in the relaxing spring breeze."

Best Conclusion

"We all can't wait until she comes. We are positive whatever you name her, it will be beautiful, and all of us will love it."

So there you have it! If you feel inspired after reading these excerpts feel free to leave us your own persuasive piece...

I love it! It does sort of put this era in perspective, though, when they think Isabella is weird and Dezziray (or however it was spelled ;) will never go out of style...Over all, I commend your students on excellent taste in names!

i would try to write my own but i can't compete with DEZZERAY! DEZZERAY! DEZZERAY! (that is chanted like U-S-A! U-S-A! if you couldn't tell from the print)

dezzeray dainty. i still think she'd like to hang out with you when she is a teenager if she is named dezzeray.

A Very Belated Welcome to Baby James Lawrence

Ok. So, I haven't updated the blog in QUITE some time.  And I have received subtle and not-so-subtle hints that certain loved ones far away would like an update!  I will work on uploading some recent pictures and events! I feel it is only fair to give James a dedicated post, as I never posted pics here when our sweet new little guy was first born.  As you can imagine, life has been a bit crazy around here.  The good kind of crazy...  But crazy. James was born 11/27/15 - almost a whole month earlier than his due date!  He was 6 pounds, 10 ounces.  He had a little stay in the NICU while his lungs strengthened and healed, and then we brought him home in time for Christmas.  His first name, James, is Ryan's dad's name (and Ryan's middle name.)  His middle name, Lawrence, was my Grandpa's name.  He has two awesome patron saints and namesakes!  He is now almost 6 months, is rolling, babbling, laughing, and starting to eat...

Sam's Blog Debut

The Coronavirus pandemic has us hunkering down at home like many people around the country, and we are working to make the best of it!  The kids miss their friends at school and are disappointed about various things that have been cancelled or put on hold indefinitely, however there we are enjoying the time together as a family.  The days are full of extra stories, games, puzzles, bike rides, and walks.  We have started a few activities as part of our "school at home" routine and figured that resurrecting the blog might be a fun way to share what the kids are up to. But first, since the last time I wrote on the blog James was just learning how to crawl, and now James is a 4-year-old big brother, we figured we should officially introduce Mr. Samuel Drexel on the blog!  Sam is 9 months old now and he is lots of fun.  The kids have figured out a few ways to get him belly laughing in recent days.  We all laugh when he crawls after a pilates ball and pounces...

Happy Birthday Great Grandma Marguerite!

Ryan's grandmother is celebrating a special birthday this summer, and in honor of that, her whole family got together to celebrate.  All her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were there!  It was quite a party.  Our boys got to meet Grandma Gerrick for the first time which was so special.  We also went to a baseball game, the aquarium, swam in the pool, saw the ocean, and ate yummy seafood.  Despite the fact that we were recovering from summer sickies, it was a lovely time.
